ABC newspaper has published an extensive interview with IRB Barcelona adjunt director, Joan Massagué, following the renewal of the collaboration for cancer research between IRB Barcelona and the BBVA Foundation. Massagué explains that the focus of his research is now directed toward understanding the mechanisms that allow some tumour cells that have spread to survive chemotherapy in an effort to eliminate them before they turn dangerous again. Massagué points out that 90% of cancer deaths are caused by metastasis, the appearance of new tumours in organs different from where the original tumour appeared.
