The ICREA Acadèmia Award allows university professors to prioritise their dedication to research for 5 years.

The Cell Signaling laboratory, headed by Dr. Eulàlia de Nadal and Dr. Francesc Posas, studies cell adaptation response to stress.

Dr. Eulàlia de Nadal, head of the Cell Signaling laboratory at IRB Barcelona, has been awarded the 2020 ICREA Acadèmia Award from the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies (ICREA). It is the second time that she has received this recognition. In the next five years, Dr. de Nadal will focus her research on the study of the transcriptional regulation in response to stress, characterising its heterogeneity, as well as identifying new histone modifications. She will also explore the therapeutic potential of the molecular mechanisms discovered.

The ICREA Acadèmia Programme was launched in 2008 with the aim to help university faculty in an active and expansive phase of their research careers to dedicate more time to research activities. The winners of the ICREA Acadèmia Award—Professors working in public universities in Catalonia—receive a generous research grant for five years.

Dr. de Nadal has been an associate professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Pompeu Fabra University since 2008 and full professor at the same university and group leader at IRB Barcelona since 2017. She has published more than 50 scientific articles and several review articles and book chapters. She has co-directed 10 doctoral theses and has served on several national and international scientific panels.

Now in its 12th year, the 2020 ICREA Acadèmia Awards, which recognise the scientific trajectory of university professors, have been presented to 274 members of university faculty. Over five years, the awardees receive €40,000/year to support their lines of research. ICREA Professors devote less time to teaching activities to be able to concentrate on research.

Of the 28 group leaders currently at IRB Barcelona, 15 are ICREA Research Professors and 4 hold the ICREA Acadèmia Distinction. Supported by the Government of Catalonia, the ICREA Foundation was set up to attract and retain scientific talent in CERCA centres and universities in Catalonia. ICREA recognition is a seal of quality and excellence.

About IRB Barcelona

The Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) pursues a society free of disease. To this end, it conducts multidisciplinary research of excellence to cure cancer and other diseases linked to ageing. It establishes technology transfer agreements with the pharmaceutical industry and major hospitals to bring research results closer to society, and organises a range of science outreach activities to engage the public in an open dialogue. IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 researchers and more than 30 nationalities. Recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence since 2011, IRB Barcelona is a CERCA centre and member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST).
