The Ferrer Research Foundation acknowledges the various perspectives of his research into cancer and aging.
Manuel Serrano, group leader of the Cellular Plasticity and Disease Lab at the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) and ICREA Research Professor, has received the Severo Ochoa Prize for Biomedical Research for his work "Tissue damage and senescence provide critical signals for cell reprogramming in vivo".
Organised by the Ferrer Research Foundation, this award was contended by a total of 15 outstanding candidates and went to Manuel Serrano “for being one of the greatest authorities in the understanding of aging from different perspectives (cancer, metabolism and regeneration)”. The prize will be delivered on May next year in Madrid.
The selection jury was made up of the members of the Foundation's Scientific Committee: Francesc Jané Carrencá (Autonomous University of Barcelona), Enrique de la Morena (Fundación Jiménez Díaz), Joan Rodés Teixidor (IDIBAPS); Ciril Rozman (University of Barcelona), Margarita Salas Falgueras (CBMSO) y Miquel Vilardell Tarrés (Autonomous University of Barcelona).
Manuel Serrano joined IRB Barcelona in May 2017 with the support of the Obra Social "la Caixa".
